Lists & Reviews
- The Lawyers Guide to Collaboration Tools and Technologies
This is the companion site to the book of the same name. Collaboration and communication are central to good project management. While the entire Web site, accompanying wiki pages and the book are all worth checking out, here is the direct link to the Wiki page for the list of project management software for lawyers: http://collaborationtools.pbworks.com/Project+Management - E-discovery consultant Greg Buckles's "E-Discovery Application Matrix" offers an extensive catalog of electronic discovery applications that can be searched and sorted by EDRM phase and product features. Select "project management" from the "Browse by EDRM Phase" drop-down for a list of applications that can help you manage your e-discovery projects.
- On-line document litigation-document SaaS provider Lexbe's litiReviews site offers third-party reviews of legal and litigation software. While there is not a "project management" category, the "case management", "litigation management", and "practice management" categories have reviews of some software relevant to legal project managers.
- e-LegalTechnology.org's "Matter Management" category
- LitSupport Q&A List of Project Dashboard Applications
For some time now, Mark Kerzner has provided weekly summaries of information shared on the LitSupport Yahoo Group discussion board at his "Legal Technology" blog. Last month he launched "LitSupport Q & A" that provides this information in a question and answer format as a free service to the litigation support community.
General Project Management
- Microsoft Project
The most commonly used project management software product. - Genius Project, by Genius Inside
Available for Lotus Notes and Web-based SaaS.
DISCLAIMER: Genius Inside is a sponsor of this blog. - Serena OpenProj & Projects On Demand
OpenProj is a free, open-source, desktop solution designed to be an alternative to MS Project. Projects On Demand is the subscription-based, collaborative, Web-based SaaS version. - Open Workbench
Open Workbench is a free, feature-rick project management application that can work with MS Project files. The software is resource-focused more than task focused, has a high learning curve, and is best suited for larger projects. That said, if you are looking for a full-featured project-management application, you can't beat the price of Open Workbench. The free version will only run on a single PC. If you want multiple people collaborating on managing projects using workbench, you will need to purchase CA Clarity PPM. - ]Project Open[
Open Source Project management & ERP system. Fee self-hosted solutions. Fee-based installation, consulting, and SaaS solutions available. - RationalPlan by Stand By Soft, Ltd.
- Easy Project Plan
This Excel Addin provides many of the features of much more expensive and complex project management software. It can import from and export to MS Project files. It can also sync tasks with Microsoft Outlook. - Method 123 Project Management Professional
I'm frequently asked for a source of project-management templates. While there are many sources of free templates available, pulling them all together with consistent formatting, following a consistent methodology, with good instructions and examples can require a great deal of effort. Method 123 has put together an impressive set of templates, along with a well-documented methodology that conforms to both the PMBOK and PRINCE II standards. It is a very helpful resource for new project managers. Legal Project Managers will not find all of the forms helpful and the examples are not targeted at the legal industry, but the application makes it easy to copy, edit, and re-purpose the templates into your own specific libraries. The company also offers a solid Web-based project-management application: http://www.projectmanager.com/
